My phone rang once in the middle of the night. It was him. "...Nothing, just wondering if you're asleep yet." After a few seconds of silence, he added: "...Haven't had a proper meal in two days. Didn't want to mention it." The light across the window flickered dimly—he was probably standing by the window, reluctant to turn on the main light.
